Pedalling hard for Bury Hospice!

An update on Director Julian’s progress through the Italian Classics

This month, our Co-Director Julian Ferrier has been hitting some of the most famous cycling routes in Italy, pedalling hard to raise money for Bury Hospice. Here’s how he’s been getting on…

Day 1 – Saturday 4th June

Whilst people across the UK were partying on down and making the most of the Jubilee celebrations, Julian touched ground in Milan and made a start on building the bikes in 30-degree heat, ready for day one of the Italian Classics trip!

His aim was to cover 60 miles in order to reach the first hotel in Bergamo. However, after making a quick detour to cycle the Monza Circuit (a 3.6-mile historic racetrack north of Milan), and taking a few wrong turns en route, he ended up covering a bit more than that!

Day 2 – Sunday 5th June

Reporting in at 9pm after setting off 13 hours prior, Julian celebrated completing Il Lombardia, having spent most of the day relying on one brake, which proved to be particularly challenging during the descents of the day’s 14 climbs!

He also managed to get some great shots of Lake Como, and all while avoiding a storm to make it to the hotel in one piece!

Day 3 – Monday 6th June

Julian and friends made the most of their shorter day and fuelled up on fresh pizza, with a wonderful view of the stunning Duomo di Milano, in preparation for what was to be a very long day 4 covering almost 200 miles to reach Sanremo.

More updates to follow!

Day 4 – Tuesday 7th June

Covering the 186 miles from Milan to Sanremo, it was a long day in the saddle for Julian, but he made it! He reported in to tell us that he was excited to be heading off to the mountains for day 5!

Day 5 – Thursday 9th June

Julian completed an intense climbing day which saw the elevation reach over 11,000ft!

Unfortunately, during his descent of the last mountain, there was a loud bang, and his bike encountered some technical difficulties. After spending a large portion of the day stuck on the side of the mountain awaiting the arrival of the support van, the day really put him through his paces, and he was pleased to get back to base by the end of it!

Day 6 – Friday 10th June

Julian managed to get back on the roads and set off from Barcolenette, hitting the mountains on his route to Nice – 104 miles away!

Day 7 – Saturday 11th June

After completing the 28km climb to reach the top of Col de la Cayolle, Julian and the group made some great progress on their journey to Nice.

Once they’d arrived at their final destination, they stripped the bikes and loaded their cases onto the support van ahead of their flight home – not before enjoying a few well-deserved drinks in the sunshine, of course!
