Uncover 5 of North West England’s most unforgettable rural gems

5 of North West England's rural gems
Written by Julian Ferrier

Join us as we explore 5 of North West England’s rural gems, extending to Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Each brimming with an alluring blend of history, heritage and warm local hospitality.

Nestled among rolling hills and tranquil countryside, it’s no wonder our team here at Pearson Ferrier have long been believers that the North West’s picturesque rural towns and villages are some of England’s best-kept secrets.

And with breathtaking landscapes, winding country roads and buckets of rich history waiting to be discovered – how could we resist?

Let’s take a look…

Ramsbottom

In first place on our list is Ramsbottom. This charming town on the edge of the West Pennine Moors has more to offer than beautiful scenery and countryside walks. It’s the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary – packed with award-winning restaurants, quirky cafes, a thriving local music scene and plenty of leisure facilities. Not just a pretty face, Ramsbottom’s rich industrial past is visible in its beautiful Victorian architecture and the historic East Lancashire Railway.

Rawtenstall

Next, venture just 17 miles north of Manchester, and you’ll find Rawtenstall – a typical Lancashire town boasting cobbled streets, stone architecture and dramatic landscapes. The hub of the town can be found on Bank Street – with a wealth of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. But the charm doesn’t end there; Rawtenstall also boasts a thriving market where you’ll find a medley of delights from Thai food to handmade pizzas, vegan treats and a refreshing juice bar. We love the small-town feel and spirit of this charming Lancastrian town!

Holcombe Brook & Greenmount

If the allure of serene village life, complete with local pubs, calls to you, then these two villages won’t disappoint. Discover Holcombe Brook & Greenmount, renowned for their tight-knit communities and sweeping views of the West Pennine Moors. Yet, nearby excitement of city life is just over fifteen miles away in Manchester. With easy access to the motorway –  the villages strike the perfect balance between tranquillity and liveliness.

Hawkshaw

Next on our list is the stunning village on the border of Greater Manchester, nestled between Bury and Bolton. With a population of just 1,000 people and no bus service, Hawkshaw offers a distinctive tranquillity. Completed by two pubs, a shop and a pair of churches – quaint terraced homes and pretty cottages line the streets, with many homes retaining their authentic charm untouched for over two centuries. There’s no denying the unique nature of this little village.

Summerseat

Finally, Summerseat is as sleepy and secluded as they come. Nestled in the valley between Bury and Ramsbottom and surrounded by lush, green countryside – the charm is in how idyllic it is. The peaceful atmosphere is boosted by the tucked-away location – but don’t worry about feeling cut off. Bury is just a quick five-minute drive away, and the historic East Lancashire Railway weaves through it. So if you want to dabble in and out of town life, Summerseat is the perfect place for you.

So there we have it, 5 of North West England’s rural gems.

From the lively music and restaurant scene in Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall’s bustling market, the peaceful village life of Holcombe Brook and Greenmount, or the timeless charm of Hawkshaw and Summerseat – each of these rural gems has something unique to offer.

However, with most of our team growing up in the region, there were dozens more rural towns and villages we could’ve included in our rundown. From Walshaw and Tottingham to Turton and Edgworth, right through to Birtle, Bamford and Norden – Lancashire and Greater Manchester aren’t without their wealth of charming rural spots.
