How to get your house ready to sell

Wondering about how to get your house ready to sell?

With long summer nights, garden parties and summer BBQs just around the corner – it should come as no surprise that the summer months also bring plenty of house buyers eager to find their dream homes.

In fact, we’d go as far as to say that the upcoming season is primed for house hunting.

Thanks to the longer days, more potential buyers are more inclined to spend their evenings viewing properties and preparing to move. This makes May the perfect time to begin getting your property ready for sale…

With that said, we’ve collated our top advice to help you get your house ready to sell.

Let’s dive in…

Curb appeal and outdoor maintenance

If you’re not familiar with the term ‘curb appeal’ – it’s time to take notes. The phrase refers to how attractive your property and its surroundings are when viewed from the street.

If you can manage to leave a great first impression on potential buyers as they drive by your property or approach it – you’re much more likely to generate more interest and potentially command a higher selling price.

Elements that typically increase curb appeal include:

  • The garden/landscaping
  • The front door
  • Doorstep decor
  • Flowers and potted plants
  • Freshening up exterior walls

In essence, boosting your home’s curb appeal is about highlighting its best features and creating an inviting exterior that draws buyers in.

Inspect and repair any issues

Next up, now is the perfect time to walk through your house and give it a thorough inspection. This should include checking the roof for any leaks, ensuring the plumbing works correctly and making sure that all electrical systems are safe and functional. If anything needs repairing – you’ve got time to arrange for repairs and get on top of the problem.

Some things to be mindful of are:

  • Checking the roof for leaks
  • Ensure your electrical system works correctly and safely
  • Inspecting the property for signs of mould or water damage

It’s much more beneficial to address these issues now, than before potential buyers begin touring your home. It may seem obvious, but, a problem-free property is much more of an inviting prospect than a home riddled with needed repairs!

Getting the inside tidied up

Finally, we’ve all heard the old trope that the smell of freshly baked bread will entice your house viewers and lure them into making an offer. But whilst it might sound laughable to go such extremes, it can really pay off to do a little bit of prep before viewings.

Areas to focus on are as follows:

  • Decluttering and deep cleaning every room
  • Repainting walls in neutral tones to create a blank canvas for potential buyers
  • Rearrange any furniture to create an open and spacious feel
  • Add welcoming decor to your home, such as fresh flowers or bright accessories
  • Walking through your home with a fresh pair of eyes

And while you’re at it, don’t underestimate the power of natural light and a fresh atmosphere. During the summer months, it’s nice to have curtains, blinds and windows open if possible. This not only makes each room feel more spacious, but it also gives your home a bright and inviting feel to it.
